Hot Stove

Swisher or Nady?

The acquisition of Mark Teixeira further clogged the Yankee roster with outfield/DH types. Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon, Nick Swisher, Xavier Nady, Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera will all do battle in Spring Training in hopes of landing significant time in the outfield or at DH. While this may not be an untenable situation (Matsui and Damon aren't getting any younger), the Yanks do have a surplus right now. Full story

Yanks Sign Jason Johnson, Frankenstein DFA'd

The Yanks gave Jason Johnson a minor-league deal, according to Peter Abraham. Girardi said Johnson will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation, but unless he can somehow bounce back to his 2005 form, he'll be starting the season in the minors. Full story

Pettitte Thinks Too Highly Of Himself

Tyler Kepner of the New York Times broke the news last night that Andy Pettitte has rejected the Yankees' one-year, $10M offer for the upcoming season. Full story

Does Oliver Perez Float Your Boat?

This food for thought column from the Post actually made me do a little thinking, so I thought I'd share it with you. Kevin Kernan asks if Oliver Perez could possibly be a better option for the Yanks than Andy Pettitte, to fill out their rotation. Full story

Yanks Land Teixeira

Buster Olney is reporting the Yankees and Mark Teixeira have agreed upon a deal which will pay Teixeira more than $180M over 8 years. Full story

$5M Wanger

The Yanks have avoided arbitration with Chien-Ming Wang by signing him to a $5M deal for 2009. Peter Abraham has the release. If you recall, the Yanks took CMW to arbitration last season and wound up saving about $600,000. Wang wanted $4.6M, he wound up getting $4M flat. Full story

3 Years, $75M For Manny?

An unconfirmed report from Impacto Deportivo says the Yanks and Manny are on the verge of a three year deal worth $75M and an announcement could come Monday or Tuesday. Tim from MLBTR has a history of ID's rumor reporting in the past, so take a look at his take and decide for yourselves if you want to believe it or not. Full story

Weekend Rumor Roundup

All rumor roads lead back to two men at this point, although I'm not sure how much weight to put behind any of them. Anyway, here's the latest scuttlebutt on Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez, and my take on the rumors. Full story

CC And AJ Are Officially Yankees

The Yankees held a press conference today to unveil their two newest acquisitions, CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett. Both guys said they're here to win. Both guys seem psyched. CC said he made his mind up 10 minutes after his final meeting with Cashman. Still no movement on the defense or the lineup, however. Full story

I've tried to avoid writing about this rumor, frankly because I didn't think there was anything to it, but the longer Manny Ramirez stays a free agent and the closer Mark Teixeira comes to signing with the Red Sox, the more likely it becomes that the Yanks will make a serious run at Manny Ramirez. Full story

Burnett Is A Yankee

The Yankees have reportedly come to terms with A.J. Burnett on a 5-year deal worth $82.5M, according to Jerry Crasnick. My feelings on the matter haven't changed. This is a guy who's only thrown 200 innings thrice in his 8 years in the league. Twice, those performances came in walk years. If he doesn't have Carl Pavano written all over him, I don't know who does. Full story

Taking Stock: December 12th

Throughout the offseason we'll stop and take a minute to look at the moves the Yanks have made, their current projected lineup, rotation and pen. Then we'll make suggestions for where the team should look to improve things. Full story

Cashman Back On The Plane

Brian Cashman again left Vegas via private jet to an unknown destination earlier today. Apparently, he was headed to a meeting with Andy Pettitte. The Post says the message he carried with him was a $10M offer to fill the last rotation spot available (This is assuming they land A.J. Burnett, I suppose). Full story

$91M For Burnett, Really?...Make That $85M

UPDATE: Rosenthal now has the Yankees as the front runners with a deal worth approximately $85M for five years. Ugh.Ken Rosenthal has the scoop on a guaranteed five-year offer the Yanks have extended to A.J. Burnett. The terms: 5... Full story

Mike Cameron, Again?

Some rumors just won't die. According to Dan Graziano, the Brewers and Yankees are resuming talks which never really got off the ground at the GM Meetings last months for center fielder Mike Cameron. The rumor at the time was that the Brewers were hesitant to trade Cameron because he was pals with CC Sabathia. I guess they don't need that chip anymore. Graziano says the asking price may be Melky Cabrera. Full story

CC Gets An Opt-Out Clause

The details of Sabathia's deal are emerging. It looks like the big lefty will get 7 years/$161M from the Yanks. The kicker, though, is an opt-out clause after the third year. Good news for Yankee fans? Full story

CC Says Yes to Yankees

I guess money does talk. CC Sabathia agreed to a reported six-year, $140 million deal with the Yankees today. There are other figures floating around, but I'll stick to the original number -- for now. Full story

Not So Fast

Brian Cashman hopped on a private jet to meet with CC Sabathia for the third time since Sunday. Will he be enough of a salesman to get CC to sign on the dotted line? Is it CC's wife he's going to have to sell on the Big Apple? Full story

Next Target: A.J. Burnett

I was hoping against hope that the Atlanta Braves were going to save the Yankees from Carl Pavano Part II, otherwise known as A.J. Burnett. They still may, but this report says the Yanks are preparing an offer to top the Braves' reported 4 year/$60M deal with a vesting option for the fifth year. Full story

Yanks In On Wild Thing?

Scott Boras clients heading into their final Arb. year always seem to be trade bait. Rick Ankiel is the latest player to fall into this category and the Yanks may be one of the teams interested in him. Full story
